ARA-290, also known as Cibinetide, is an 11-amino acid synthetic peptide derived from the helix B region of erythropoietin (EPO). Unlike EPO itself, ARA-290 selectively activates the innate repair receptor (IRR) — a heterodimer of the EPO receptor and the common beta receptor (βcR) — without engaging the classical erythropoietic receptor complex. This selective binding profile makes ARA-290 of considerable research interest, as it confers tissue-protective and anti-inflammatory effects without the haematopoietic side effects associated with EPO.
In preclinical and early clinical research, ARA-290 has been studied for its potential role in peripheral neuropathy, metabolic disorders including type 2 diabetes, sarcoidosis-associated small fibre neuropathy, and inflammatory conditions. Research suggests it may modulate macrophage polarisation, promote neuronal survival, and support pancreatic beta-cell function.
