ARA-290, also known as Cibinetide, is a synthetic 11-amino acid peptide derived from the helix B surface peptide (HBSP) region of erythropoietin (EPO). Unlike EPO itself, ARA-290 selectively engages the innate repair receptor (IRR) — a heterodimer of the EPO receptor and the common beta receptor (βcR) — without stimulating erythropoiesis or haematopoiesis. This selective mechanism makes it a highly valuable compound for investigating tissue-protective and anti-inflammatory pathways independently of red blood cell production.
In preclinical research, ARA-290 has demonstrated notable activity in models of peripheral neuropathy, small fibre neuropathy, and painful diabetic neuropathy, where it appears to promote nerve fibre repair and reduce neuroinflammation. It has also been studied in the context of sarcoidosis, metabolic syndrome, and insulin sensitivity, with research suggesting potential modulation of inflammatory cytokine signalling.
