Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG) is a naturally occurring glycoprotein hormone produced during pregnancy by the syncytiotrophoblast cells of the placenta. Structurally, HCG shares an identical alpha subunit with luteinising hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), whilst its unique beta subunit confers receptor specificity. HCG exerts its primary biological effects by binding to the LH/HCG receptor, stimulating gonadal steroidogenesis and supporting corpus luteum function.
In research settings, HCG is extensively utilised in studies examining reproductive endocrinology, ovarian and testicular function, and hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis regulation. It has also been investigated in models of Leydig cell stimulation and testosterone biosynthesis, as well as in research into implantation and early pregnancy physiology.
