KPV (Lys-Pro-Val) is a naturally occurring tripeptide derived from the C-terminal sequence of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH). Despite its small size, KPV exhibits remarkable biological activity, interacting with melanocortin receptors — particularly MC1R and MC3R — to exert potent anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects without the hormonal activity associated with the full α-MSH molecule.
In preclinical research, KPV has been investigated for its ability to suppress pro-inflammatory cytokine production, including TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6, via NF-κB pathway inhibition. This positions KPV as a valuable research tool for studying inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), colitis, and other gastrointestinal inflammatory conditions. Studies have also explored its role in cutaneous wound healing, demonstrating accelerated tissue repair and reduced inflammatory infiltration at wound sites.
Additionally, KPV has shown antimicrobial properties in early-stage research, with potential relevance to infection and immunity studies.
