Semax is a heptapeptide analogue of the adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) fragment 4-7, with the sequence Met-Glu-His-Phe-Pro-Gly-Pro. Originally developed in Russia, it has been extensively investigated in preclinical and clinical research contexts for its pronounced neuroprotective and nootropic properties.
The peptide is believed to act by modulating brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) expression and its receptor TrkB signalling pathways, as well as influencing dopaminergic and serotonergic neurotransmission. Research suggests Semax may upregulate the expression of genes associated with the immune response and neuronal survival, making it of significant interest in neuroscience research.
Key areas of investigation include ischaemic stroke models, cognitive function studies, attention and memory research, and neuroprotection following central nervous system injury. It has also been explored in models of optic nerve disease and anxiety regulation.
