Triptorelin is a synthetic decapeptide analogue of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), also known as luteinising hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH). It shares structural similarity with endogenous GnRH but exhibits significantly enhanced receptor binding affinity and biological potency, making it a valuable tool in neuroendocrinology and reproductive science research.
As a GnRH agonist, triptorelin initially stimulates the pituitary gland to release luteinising hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). However, with sustained exposure, it induces receptor downregulation and desensitisation, leading to a pronounced suppression of gonadotropin secretion and subsequent reduction in sex steroid levels. This biphasic mechanism has made triptorelin a subject of extensive research into hormonal regulation and the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis.
Research applications include studies into reproductive endocrinology, hormone-dependent cell line models, precocious puberty mechanisms, and gonadotropin dynamics. It is also investigated in oncology research contexts involving hormone-sensitive tissues.
