Epitalon (also known as Epithalamin) is a synthetic tetrapeptide composed of the amino acid sequence Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly. Originally derived from the pineal gland extract Epithalamin, it has become one of the most widely studied peptides in longevity and anti-ageing research. Its primary mechanism of action involves the activation of telomerase, an enzyme responsible for elongating telomeres — the protective caps at the ends of chromosomes that shorten with each cell division. By stimulating telomerase activity, Epitalon is investigated for its potential to slow cellular ageing and extend cell lifespan in vitro.
Beyond telomere biology, research has explored Epitalon’s role in regulating melatonin secretion via the pineal gland, modulating circadian rhythm, and influencing neuroendocrine function. Studies have also examined its antioxidant properties and potential role in reducing oxidative stress at the cellular level.
