Kisspeptin-10 (KP-10) is a 10-amino acid neuropeptide derived from the C-terminal region of the kisspeptin-54 precursor protein, encoded by the KISS1 gene. It is the shortest biologically active fragment of the kisspeptin family and acts as a potent endogenous ligand for the G protein-coupled receptor GPR54 (also known as KISS1R). Upon binding, Kisspeptin-10 stimulates the hypothalamic release of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), which in turn drives the secretion of luteinising hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) from the pituitary gland, making it a critical regulator of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis.
In preclinical research, Kisspeptin-10 has been extensively investigated for its role in puberty onset, reproductive cyclicity, fertility regulation, and the neuroendocrine control of reproduction. Emerging studies also examine its potential involvement in metabolic regulation, cancer biology (particularly its role as a metastasis suppressor), and mood-related behaviours.
