Mechano Growth Factor (MGF) is a splice variant of Insulin-like Growth Factor-1 (IGF-1), produced locally in muscle tissue in response to mechanical stimulation or damage. Unlike systemic IGF-1, MGF acts in a localised, autocrine/paracrine manner, making it a subject of significant interest in musculoskeletal and regenerative research.
MGF is understood to activate muscle satellite cells — the resident stem cells responsible for muscle repair and hypertrophy — and to stimulate their proliferation prior to differentiation. Research suggests MGF plays a distinct role from mature IGF-1Ea in the early-phase response to muscle damage, potentially upregulating local repair mechanisms that would otherwise be insufficient.
Beyond skeletal muscle, preclinical studies have explored MGF’s role in cardiac muscle, neuronal tissue, and tendon repair, indicating broader regenerative potential across multiple tissue types.
