PEG-MGF (Pegylated Mechano Growth Factor) is a modified form of MGF, itself a splice variant of Insulin-like Growth Factor-1 (IGF-1) produced in response to mechanical stress or muscle damage. The pegylation process — the covalent attachment of polyethylene glycol (PEG) chains to the MGF peptide — significantly extends its half-life in vivo compared to native MGF, making it a highly valuable tool in longitudinal research models.
Mechanistically, PEG-MGF acts by activating muscle satellite cells (myoblasts), promoting their proliferation and differentiation into mature muscle fibres. This makes it a subject of considerable interest in studies relating to skeletal muscle repair, hypertrophy, and regenerative biology. Unlike standard MGF, the pegylated variant remains active in systemic circulation for an extended period, allowing researchers to examine sustained signalling effects on muscle tissue.
